Our Plastic Surgeons:

Because we educate mostly breast surgery, liposuction and tummy tuck patients; we require our plastic surgeons to be certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, which qualifies the surgeon to perform both body and facial procedures. By choosing an American Board of Plastic Surgery certified plastic surgeon; patients are ensured the surgeon has graduated from an accredited medical school and completed at least five years of residency (usually three years of general surgery and two years of plastic surgery). An ABPS certified plastic surgeon must also practice for two years and pass written and oral examinations in plastic surgery.

There are over 5000 ABPS certified plastic surgeons, and of them only a small percentage are invited to join our plastic surgeon directory. I have personally checked the qualifications of our member surgeons. In fact, our plastic surgeons meet higher standards than those of any other referral service as we only list select plastic surgeons to be in our surgeon directory. Our plastic surgeons must also maintain that standard in order to remain in our surgeon directory.

About Cosmetic Surgeons:
Some refer to plastic surgeons as cosmetic surgeons; however, a plastic surgeon is what you really want. Most doctors calling themselves "cosmetic surgeons" are not American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS) certified plastic surgeons. When considering any plastic surgery procedure of the body, such as lipo, tummy tucks and breast surgery, you can be sure your doctor is qualified, trained and experienced in plastic surgery by looking for a plastic surgeon that is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS). To learn more on how to research your surgeon, see our Research Your Surgeon page.

For a Surgeon's Hands with a Feminine Touch ~ Dr. Kimberly Short

Dr. Kimberly Short, a native of Evansville, Indiana attended Indiana University Medical School and continued her residency at Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Upon completing her residency, Dr. Short believed that it was important to pursue further cosmetic surgery training in order to offer her patients the latest advances and the best techniques. Therefore, for the next year and a half, Dr. Short trained with both national and international experts in various fields of interest to her, which include breast, body, and facial rejuvenation. Her training has taken her all over the United States and as far as the coast of France, where she received extensive experience in many cosmetic surgery procedures with multiple approaches to each different type of procedure. She was also exposed to many techniques which were on the cutting edge of technology -- techniques which have only been around the last couple of years.

Following her extensive training, Dr. Short and her family settled in Indianapolis where she opened her solo practice. Dr. Short offers experience with the newest, most advanced techniques, which is critical in the practice of plastic surgery because of the continual change and advancements.

In addition, being a female and having had cosmetic surgery herself, Dr. Short is better able to relay to her patients what to expect both pre/post-operatively. She feels it is important to create rapport and trust with all of her patients, and thus, she dedicates much of her time to educating her patients about the procedures they are considering. Dr. Short's gentle, personable approach allows patients to feel very comfortable with her and their decision to pursue a cosmetic procedure.

Breast Augmentation with Dr. Short

Plastic surgeons perform nearly 100,000 breast augmentations each year. Thanks to recent advances in breast implant design, technology and surgical techniques, there has never been a better time to consider breast augmentation. Many women consider breast augmentation to enhance the size of their breasts, but others are more interested in obtaining a little "lift" or filling up the loose skin which has resulted from pregnancy or breast feeding. Breast augmentation is not the answer for everyone, but many women feel it has helped improve not only their appearance, but also their self-confidence. Deciding if breast augmentation is right for you requires a thorough understanding of the procedure and recent advances.

Breast Implant Shape (Round vs. Anatomical)

The most important recent advance in breast augmentation surgery is the development of more naturally-shaped implants (anatomically contoured). In the past, implants had the tendency to look like halved grapefruits. Now, implants are available with a natural slope in the upper portion and fullness in the lower portion, much more like the normal breast. These teardrop-shaped implants have much less rounding toward the center of the chest, as seen in the diagram above.

During an initial consultation, patients can expect Dr. Kimberly Short to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of various implants with respect to surface texturing, implant shapes, size and placement above or below the chest muscles. She will thoroughly explain all procedures and take a number of measurements to determine the appropriate implant size and shape to best fit the patient's body frame and expectations. There are three options for placement of the incision - around the nipple, under the breast and under the arm. Dr. Short will cover these as well as the use of the endoscope, a tiny camera which can be used to limit the size of the incision.

Breast Implant Size

Every surgery is individualized to best fit each patient's specific needs. During the actual surgery, Dr. Short finds the right implant by placing "sizers" first. She raises the head of the bed to place the patient in an upright sitting position. This allows her to see exactly how the implants will lie. The appearance of the implants in the upright position may be very different from the appearance when the patient is lying down. This must be carefully assessed at the time of surgery to obtain the best result.

Breast Implant Care

Dr. Short will discuss precautions that a patient can take to maintain softness of the implants and review the post-operative recovery. Most patients will need seven to ten days to return to normal activity. Sutures are removed the first week and patients are taught several techniques to facilitate healing.
